White Bellied Caiques, also called Yellow Thighed
are a bit less common than the Black Headed & a little
larger. Their name is pronounced 'kigh-eek'.
Caiques are clowns of the parrot family! They are very
active and LOVE to play. They are a parrot that you can
have more than 1 and they remain just as loveable to
you as if you had one. But it is not necessary to have
more than 1. We have found with all the parrots we live
with that Caiques generally do not choose one person
to love and dislike others. They will go to anyone in
the family and are generally comfortable with strangers
after about 5 minutes. Quite a few will take right away
to anyone.
Caiques are surprisingly small but heavy to those who
have not previously encountered them; their body build
is compact and stocky with a "barrel"-like chest and
short, square-shaped tail. The average weight of an adult
is approximately 150 to 175 grams, and their average
lifespan is 30 years. Oscar, West Point Aviary Baby
Caiques love to chew! They will chew your fingers, not
biting, but beaking, you do have to give them things
to chew on to keep them happy. They also are known for
the 'hair surfing' and face rubbing. They will get into
long hair and 'swim like' through it, but you must becareful
not to allow them to be come tangled. The face rubbing
is them rubbing their faces all over you!
They love to chatter, whistle, and interact with people.
A great value and extremely high pet quality, Caiques
make excellent companions.
